Winter is almost here and ice skating parties are all the new rage. Don’t let your child miss out on the fun because they're a little scared or don’t know how. Here are a few simple and fun tips for teaching your child how to ice skate with confidence.

  1. Be prepared - We offer a synthetic ice skating rink rental that is great for parties for all ages, which means that it can be used in any weather. Even on a hot sunny day. If using a synthetic ice skating rink like we have to offer, we do suggest wearing pants just in case you take a few falls.

If you are going to a traditional ice skating rink, make sure to dress warm and in layers. Gloves also help with keeping hands warm during falls.

  2. Practice - Once your child has their skates on have them practice walking in them, and even falling. When they do, using the crawl position works best to get back up.

  3. Use the “Safe Position” - When  your child feels like their going to fall down let them know how to use the “Safe Position” This is when they bend their knees and put their hands on their knees. This helps a lot with being more stable.

  4. March - When walking around a traditional ice skating rink, take small baby steps, or marching steps before getting in the rink and while they get use to things on the rink as well.

  5. Hold Them From Behind - This is primarily for smaller children. Hold your small child from behind, with your hands under their armpits. This lets you hold them without them having to lean on you too heavily.

  6. Try Lessons: If your child is serious about really getting better, why not try lessons? Classes usually start at age 3 and up.

  7. Have Fun - There will be a lot of falling, but just be sure to have fun and encourage your child to keep trying!
